چکیده

New Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the five-component pulsar B1857−26 provide detailed insight into its pulse-sequence modulation phenomena for the first time. The outer conal components exhibit a 7.4-rotation period, longitude-stationary modulation. Several lines of evidence indicate a carousel circulation time P̂3 of about 147 stellar rotations, characteristic of a pattern with 20 beamlets. The pulsar nulls some 20 per cent of the time, usually for only a single pulse, and these nulls show no discernible order or periodicity. Finally, the pulsar’s polarization-angle traverse raises interesting issues: if most of its emission comprises a single polarization mode, the full traverse exceeds 180◦; or if both polarization modes are present, then the leading and the trailing halves of the profiles exhibit two different modes. In either case, the rotating-vector model fails to fit the polarization-angle traverse of the core component.

The topology and polarization of subbeams associated with the ‘drifting’ subpulse emission of pulsar B0943+10 – VI. Analysis of an 8-h Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observation

We report analysis of an 8-h observation of PSR B0943+10 at 325 MHz performed at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in India. B0943+10 is well known for displaying regular subpulse drifting and two emission modes. We investigate the modal behaviour of B0943+10. By reconstructing an entire ‘B’ mode from two consecutive ‘B’ modes, we estimate that the pulsar spends roughly 7.5 h in the ‘B...

Sub-Milliarcsecond Precision of Pulsar Motions: Using In-Beam Calibrators with the VLBA

We present Very Long Baseline Array phase-referenced measurements of the parallax and proper motion of two pulsars, B0919+06 and B1857–26. Sub-milliarcsecond positional accuracy was obtained by simultaneously observing a weak calibrator source within the 40′ field of view of the VLBA at 1.5 GHz. We discuss the merits of using weak close calibrator sources for VLBI observations at low frequencie...

Periodic nulls in the pulsar B1133+16

Numerous studies of the brightest Cambridge pulsar, B1133+16, have revealed little order in its individual pulses, apart from a weak 30-odd-rotation-period fluctuation feature and that some 15 per cent of the star’s pulsars are ‘nulls’. New Arecibo observations confirm this fluctuation feature and that it modulates all the emission, not simply the ‘saddle’ region. By replacing each pulse with a...

Exploring the remarkable subpulse drift and polarization properties of PSR B0818−41

PSR B0818−41 is one of the few pulsars which show multiple drift regions having well defined phase relationship. In this paper we report new results from the multifrequency observations of this pulsar with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We determine the mean flux of the pulsar at multiple frequencies and find evidence for a low frequency turnover in its spectrum. Significant linear...
